Magnesium Stearate

Magnesium Stearate

General Information:

Magnesium stearate is one of the most commonly used metallic salt boundary lubricants and excipients. It is relatively inexpensive, chemically stable, and has a high melting point and lubrication property. The lubricant effect of magnesium stearate relates to the adherence of the polar moiety on granules/powders, while the lipophilic moiety is oriented outward from the particle’s surface. Also, when used in plastic deforming fillers and diluents, such as Starch (e.g Maize starch) and microcrystalline cellulose, Magnesium stearate can lead to tablets of weak strength and high friability.
Magnesium stearate is also used in cosmetic products and topical medical devices to enhance moisture repellant properties. Typical concentrations are between 0.25 and 5% by weight.

Application & Use:

Magnesium stearate is widely used in the production of dietary supplement and pharmaceutical tablets, capsules and powders as well as many food products, including a variety of confectionery, spices and baking ingredients.
It is present in many food supplements, confectionery, chewing gum, herbs and spices, and baking ingredients. Magnesium stearate is also commonly used as an inactive ingredient in the production of pharmaceutical tablets, capsules and powders.
Magnesium stearate is widely used as a food additive.
Magnesium stearate is magnesium salt of the fatty acid, stearic acid. It has been widely used for many decades in the food industry as an emulsifier, binder and thickener, as well as an anticaking, lubricant, release, and antifoaming agent.

Advantage & Disadvantage:

Magnesium stearate is generally safe to consume, but too much of it can have a laxative effect. In large amounts, it can irritate the mucus lining of the bowels. This may trigger a bowel movement or diarrhea.
