Magnesium Stearate is one of the most commonly used metallic salt lubricants and pharmaceutical excipients. It is chemically stable, cost-effective, possesses a high melting point and exhibits excellent lubricating properties. The lubricant action of Magnesium Stearate is attributed to the adherence of its polar moiety on granules and powders, while the lipophilic moiety is oriented outward from the particle surface.

Magnesium Stearate is also used in cosmetic products and topical medical devices to enhance moisture-repellent properties. Typical concentrations used range between 0.25% and 5% by weight.

Advantages & Disadvantages

Magnesium Stearate provides excellent lubrication, flowability and moisture resistance. It has been safely used for decades in the pharmaceutical and food industries.

However, excessive consumption may produce a laxative effect and may irritate the mucous lining of the intestines, potentially causing bowel movements or diarrhea. In formulations containing plastic deforming fillers such as starch and microcrystalline cellulose, excessive quantities may result in tablets with reduced hardness and increased friability.
